Hawaii Trip - May 2003

Hawaii - Honolulu, May 2003

ALOHA!!

Well, in May of 2003, I took my first (but hopefully not LAST) trip to Hawaii. I had SO much fun and I highly recommend the trip to anybody who enjoys wonderful food, gorgeous sunsets, great weather, fun times - whether doing touristy things or just laying at the beach - and hot men to see... Ok, that last part is just a little over the top, but.....

During the stay, I had the opportunity to do a little of EVERYTHING, from the relax and lay about to the major tourstiy things. I got a chance to try scuba diving (it's GREAT! Can't wait to try more!), went to the Polynesian Cultural Center - a living museum showcasing a number of native cultures of Polynesia - from Samoa to Tahiti, Fiji to Tonga, and a few others in between. It was a great time and fantastic learning experience... Plus, seeing men in grass skirts - some of which were VERY cute - was a bonus! I even got to dance with some of them during their demos... It was GREAT!

Also took a lunch cruise around O'ahu and got some great pix of Honolulu and Diamond Head and the beautiful sights to see. Honolulu also has some GREAT architecture - from the older 'Pink Palace' hotel and other original buildings to the modern skyscrapers in downtown and Waikiki. Got a chance to hit the Honolulu Zoo - over 40 acres of birds, animals, and more to see.

Also got a chance to take in some of the local gay community - hitting some shops, restaurants and bars.... If you go, Hula's is a GREAT bar and have some great bartenders and drinks.... TRYST is a great small restaurant, with innovative food and great staff... And, for your books, magazines, clothing and assorted jewelry and other adult items, check out 80% Straight, at Eaton Square. The owner got the name of the store from his score on an online personality quiz he took...

Well, below are just SOME of the pictures I took during my week stay.... I'll add more as I sort through the OVER 500 PICTURES I took and post more soon. Enjoy what you see and have a great time.

And think of planning a vacation to Honolulu - a big city with a small town feel - everybody was super friendly....

Aloha and A Hui Hou!

This is one of my favorite images

I took this picture as the sun was setting on the first day there.... This catamaran goes out from the Sheraton Waikiki, and I thought this was a great shot!
Diamond Head - at Sunset....

As the sun was setting behind me, I turned and snapped this pic of Diamond Head, as the lights of Waikiki were coming on below....

HULAS Bar and Lei Stand

Hula's Bar and Lei Stand used to be on Kuhio Avenue, but moved over to the Aston Grand Waikiki hotel. They're located on the 2nd floor and have some great views of the park across the street, the Honolulu Zoo - which is IN the park, and down to the beach. The views were great, as was the service, the staff and the atmosphere... A must visit for good old Gay times!
Hula's Bartender and my Mai Tai...

This is one of the great staff members at Hula's. Very friendly and personable and he makes GREAT Mai Tais! Oh, and did I mention that he was HOT, too?!?

Polynesian Cultural Center

We took an all day excursion to the Polynesian Cultural Center on the windward side of the island. This 'living musuem' showcases the native practices of many of the Polynesian Islands - with villages for many cultures. We got up and danced during the presentation at the Tahiti village, and took this picture after the dancing. The native boy is cute and can REALLY shake his groove thang!
Pearl Harbor

While in Hawaii, we rented a car - Chrysler Sebring convertible (thanks Enterprise!) for a few days and drove about. Went over to Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial. It is a beautiful monument to an ugly time in U.S. history.

USS Arizona Memorial
When you arrive at the Arizona Memorial, you are given a ticket to see a historical film of the attack and then taken by boat over to the memorial. The building is built directly over the sunken wreckage of the ship, where nearly 1200 service members lost their lives defending the United States. It is a somber and unique experience. The flag flying over the monument is actually attaced to an original pole on the ship below.
